When the actual 1968 Ford Mustang GT from the legendary Steve McQueen film Bullitt emerged this year after decades of obscurity, it became an instant collector’s item. Ford brought it to the 2018 Detroit Auto Show so that the 2019 Bullitt Mustang will have some company, and last month, it went on temporary display at the National Mall in Washington, D.C. as part of the Historic Vehicles Association’s “Cars at the Capital” festival.

Does Jay Leno own the Bullitt Mustang?

Jay Leno has driven the 1968 Bullitt Mustang “hero car” and its current version back-to-back. The car’s mechanicals has been rebuilt so it goes, stops, and turns like new, but the body has been left unrestored, exhibiting 50 years of wear.

Sean Kiernan is the current owner of the original Bullitt hero car, not Jay Leno, making no secret of the fact that Steve McQueen was adamant on purchasing the Mustang from the Kiernan family years after filming concluded.
