Marshall S. Grossman, English professor

Marshall S. Grossman, 63, an English professor who taught at the University of Maryland from 1989 until March, died March 29 at his home in Kensington. He had cancer.

Dr. Grossman began his career at the University of Maryland as an associate professor and was promoted to a full professor in 1996. Earlier in his career, he was an associate professor of English and comparative literature at Fordham University in New York.

Marshall Scott Grossman was a New York native and a 1969 graduate of Binghamton University in New York. He received a master’s degree in 1973 from Brooklyn College and a doctorate from New York University in 1977, both in English.

In 1993, he received the outstanding teacher award from the University of Maryland. He had been a fellow with the Folger Shakespeare Library since 2009.

His marriage to Ann Kruger ended in divorce.

Survivors include his partner of two years, Karen Imler of Arlington County; a son from his marriage, Jacob Grossman of Washington; his mother, Evelyn Grossman of Staten Island, N.Y.; a brother; and a sister.
