A 36-year-old man was fatally shot early Wednesday in Southeast D.C., police said.

The shooting occurred in the 3900 block of Southern Avenue SE, near the District’s border with Prince George’s County, Md. Police said a call came in about the incident at 3:19 a.m., and officers found a man unconscious and not breathing.

Julius Mccree, of Southeast, died at a hospital, police said.

“He made me feel happy and loved,” said his 12-year-old daughter, Ja’Mari Mccree.

A police spokesperson said that according to a preliminary investigation, the shooting occurred outside.

By Wednesday afternoon, police had not made an arrest in Mccree’s killing. Police initially misspelled his last name.

Latest police data shows 230 people have been killed so far this year in Washington, a 31 percent increase compared with the same period last year.
